Internet Security

Every file, webpage, or email you open is a potential threat.
Everyone with a computer needs a few security programs to protect from viruses, even if it's not online! The risks are exponential with internet surfing, especially for 'always on connections'.
How to protect yourself from viruses, trojans, hackers, and malware...

Firewalls

When sending and receiving information online, your modem needs an open line of communication with servers, called 'ports'. There are MANY ports to connect by, but only a handful are used by average internet activity, leaving the remaining ports sitting open and vulnerable to hackers. A firewall closes unneeded ports and blocks any questionable attempts to connect to or from the internet.

ZoneAlarm is a good firewall, and available as freeware.

Malware (Spyware, Adware, etc.) & PopUps

Does your homepage keep changing? Pop Ups appearing for no apparent reason? Browser windows or programs shutting down on you? You may have malware on your computer.
Get rid of malware using AdAware and Spybot S&D. I recommend downloading both, they are freeware.
PopUps are not just annoying, they often contain malware. Google browser add-on does a great job at killing pop ups and is also free.

Viruses & Trojans

Download our recommended free virus scanner, called AVG, at Grisoft. Or buy the full version of AVG Professional. For extra security, TrendMicro has an online scanner. For continuous security, be sure to update your virus software regularly, and scan often to keep your computer safe.

Miscellanious Security Tips

  • Download any security patches for your browser
  • Turn off 'install on demand' in your browser by going to Tools, Internet Options, and click on the Advanced tab. Uncheck Enable Install On Demand.
  • At secure sites, double check for the httpS:// and that the lock symbol is displayed on the bottom of your browser. Double click the lock to check if the certificate is valid.
  • Don't open email attachments
  • Turn off the preview pane in Outlook Express in the Tools, Options area
  • Scan newly downloaded files and programs before opening
  • Clear your browsers' cache daily after surfing at Tools, Internet Options. Here you can click Clear History, and also Delete Files.../OK when prompted. Next click Settings, View Files. Highlight all files and delete.
